Nanomaterials for medical devices: size matters

Technion Australia is delighted to invite you to a conversation with A/Prof. Olga Shimoni who will share how nanotechnology impacts our lives and healthcare in particular.

Nanotechnology has applications across chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering, covering anything from wrinkle-resistant fabrics to better baseball bats and batteries with improved energy storage capacity. However, it is in the healthcare field that nanotechnology promises to provide the most significant results.

One of the most promising potential contributions of nanotechnology is in the space of screening and diagnostic tools for early detection of diseases. Early and accurate detection of diseases exhibits several advantages, such as disease at an early stage can be curable or efficiently treatable, reduction of financial burden to individuals and the public health system as well as real-time health monitoring.

Beginning her career and academic journey at the Technion’s school of material engineering, Olga, for the past 15 years has dedicated her life to understanding biology, physics, material and chemical sciences and how it impacts the world we live in.

Her passion and specific area of expertise includes studying the implications nanotech has on medical devices and applications with particular emphasis on its capacity of identifying diseases at an early stage.
