Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2011 for the discovery of a crystal with pentagonal rotational symmetry – a phenomenon that had been considered impossible for about seventy years. Huge excitement! Research Professor Dan Shechtman from the Faculty of Materials Engineering at the Technion won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of quasi-periodic crystals in 1982. In 1982 Prof. Shechtman was on sabbatical at the US National Bureau of Standards laboratories in Maryland. Establishment of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute: The Technion and Cornell University jointly won a competition held by the City of New York to establish a technology center in the city. 2017 – The new campus on Roosevelt Island in the heart of New York City is inaugurated.
T3 – Technion Technology Transfer is the business development unit of the Technion, which operates within the Technion Research & Development Foundation and is responsible for the commercialization of the intellectual property originating from the Technion while protecting it. The unit is responsible for examining new ideas and technologies and their implementation as well as for registering and maintaining patents. As part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the laying of the Technion’s, the sports center celebrated with a beach volleyball tournament. Dozens of tons of sand were brought to the academic ivory tower, creating the field on which eight teams from around the world played volleyball.
The establishment of the Guangdong-Technion-Israel Institute of Technology: a project born out of a historic partnership between the Li Ka Shing Foundation, the Guangdong Provincial Government, the Municipality of Shantou and the Technion. In 2017, the campus was inaugurated in the city of Shantou in China.
The Israel Prize was awarded to Prof. Adam Mazor for changing the perception of Israel’s spatial planning and design as reflected in various national and urban outline plans, including the “Israel 2020” plan. His concept emphasizes the preservation of cities’ green lungs and open spaces and encourages concentrated high-density construction in the city centers. Prof. Mazor developed mathematical models for urban planning. As part of his work at the Technion, he educated many generations of architects and urban planners.
Professor Segev, one of the ten senior professors with the rank of research professor at the Technion, is a pioneering physicist in the field of optics and lasers, and his scientific works are cited in thousands of scientific articles. He has won many awards for his research, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Sciences, and his laboratory has developed an innovative laser system, unique in the world.
The term “Technion family” usually refers to all the researchers, students and workers at the Technion, but for the Hiar family from Peki’in the Technion is truly a “family affair”: four the family’s five children are studying at the Technion this year, as well as the fiancés of the two oldest siblings.
Amit Goffer is an Israeli inventor and serial entrepreneur, considered one of the pioneers of the artificial exoskeleton industry. In 2015, he received an Honorary Fellow degree from the president of the Technion, Prof. Peretz Lavie, in recognition of the developments he invented for Israel and humanity, chief among them the ReWalk technology. Goffer was born in Moshav Kidron. He studied at the Ort High School in Rehovot and earned his bachelor’s degree at the Technion as part of the IDF academic reserve (Atuda). Dr. Aviv Censor has recorded about ten courses in the fields of calculus and algebra. His recorded lectures are used not only by students at the Technion, but by students at all institutions of higher education in Israel and even by high school students. The courses were filmed without directing and editing in front of students in a real classroom, with Dr. Censor using only a marker and a whiteboard – yet the videos have millions of views. Prof. Hossam Haick, a faculty member in the Wolfson Faculty of Chemical Engineering and a member of the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute at the Technion, received the award for his enormous contribution to the diagnosis of diseases using innovative markers he discovered as part of his research at the Technion. These are markers that appear in the oral cavity and skin. At the same time, Prof. Haik was included in the list of the 100 most influential people in the world by GOOD magazine published in Los Angeles.
Aleph Farms is a cellular agriculture company. We design new ways to grow quality animal products that improve sustainability, food security, and animal welfare in our food systems. 2016- Professor Shulamit Levenberg conducted initial experiments at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology with growing cow cells on a plant protein matrix. 2017- The Kitchen Hub of the Strauss Group, together with Didier Toubia and Dr. Neta Lavon began transferring tissue engineering technologies from Prof. Levenberg’s lab. 2018- We unveiled the world’s first cultivated thin-cut steak!
The Technion presents the Technion DRIVE Accelerator, a nine-month premium framework for ventures before initial investment and after initial investment (Pre-Seed, Seed). The framework, in which the Technion made an initial investment of 2.5 million dollars, is intended for projects of faculty members, students and graduates of the Technion in the fields of digital health, augmented reality, fintech, ICT, big data, robotics, autonomous vehicles and materials. In 2018 Drive completed a fundraising round of 7 million dollars. Marcelle Machluf, born in 1963, is an Israeli scientist. She is a professor of biotechnology engineering and food engineering who researches, among other things, measures to treat cancer and tissue engineering. Dean of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering at the Technion, Prof. Machluf was chosen to light a torch on the 70th Independence Day of the State of Israel.
