On April 21, 1953, the cornerstone was laid for the Faculty of Aeronautical Engineering Building, which was also the cornerstone for the establishment of the Technion campus in Neve Sha’anan. The Faculty of Aeronautical Engineering was the first faculty established on the new Technion campus in Neve Sha’anan. The establishment of the Faculty of Aeronautical Engineering at the Technion was initiated shortly after the establishment of the state with the support of then Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, who understood that its establishment was essential to Israel’s security. The establishment of the faculty was led from the academic side by Prof. Sydney Goldstein, a world-renowned British-Jewish mathematician known for his contribution to the field of aeronautics. Goldstein accepted the Technion’s invitation to become head of the mathematics department and under this position established the Department of Aeronautical Engineering in 1950. The small department kept growing until it became a faculty in 1962. In 1988, the word “space” was added to its name – the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. The faculty building, which was the first on the new campus, was designed by Prof. Yohanan Ratner, whose son David was a pilot who fell while performing his duties. The building was nicknamed “the crown for the new Technion City in Neve Shana’an” and attracted many visitors who wanted to look at it (and take pictures!) of the view.
