Prof. Bilha Mannheim was one of the founders of the field of sociology of work in Israel and one of the top professors in this field in Israel. Prof. Mannheim was born in Germany in 1929 and immigrated to Israel with her family in 1936. She joined the Technion in 1959, after returning to Israel from studies in the USA, first in the Department of General Studies and later in the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management. In 1984, she was the first woman to serve as dean of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management at the Technion. She served as the coordinator on the status of women at the Technion in the years 1987-1991, and this was the first appointment of its kind at an institution of higher education in the State of Israel. Mannheim’s research spanned several areas: social psychology of self-image, urban sociology, the impact of technology on the worker, retirement from work, the organizational system of work, attitudes to work, and most importantly – the centrality of the role of work. Prof. Mannheim died in September 2022, and was laid to rest in the cemetery in Kibbutz Neve Yam.
