When Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, Technion President Uri Sivan vowed that learning and discovery would continue at the Technion with as little disruption as possible. The Technion community would not let terrorism win. Thanks to the University’s strategic initiatives to support student-reservists and to secure the campus – and the generosity of donors – the Technion has fulfilled President Sivan’s commitment.

The University is deeply proud of the sacrifice demonstrated by its student reservists who, when called up for active duty, pause their lives to defend Israel.

Since October 7 and throughout the ensuing war, the University’s focus has been to meet the financial, psychological, and academic needs of student reservists, more than 4,000 of whom have been called up for active duty. A major concern has been that student reservists would drop out of school due to the extraordinary demands of IDF service, derailing their studies and future potential. Not only would this be a loss for the students, but it also would be a loss for Israel, which relies on its brightest minds to power the Startup Nation. With your help, every effort was made to help keep students in school and on track to graduate.

Gifts to the Technion Reservist Fund and the Technion Emergency Student and Security Support Fund have enabled the University to ensure a smooth transition back to academic life for students returning from military service, providing tailored courses and flexibility in academic schedules, extensions on assignments and exams, psychological and emotional support services, and financial aid. This multifaceted aid has enabled student-reservists to continue striving toward their academic goals even as they protect and defend the State of Israel.

In addition, gifts to the Technion Emergency Student and Security Support Fund have ensured the University’s ability to protect students, faculty, staff, and campus infrastructure. Thanks to extensive security measures the Technion has put in place, students have remained on campus and continued their studies despite missile attacks on northern Israel and other imminent threats.

Financial Support

The Technion has supported its student-reservists financially with:

  • Waived tuition or dormitory fees for one semester for all students mobilised for military service
  • Fellowship extensions for graduate studentreservists, enabling students to lengthen their time-to-degree

Psychological Support

The Technion has supported its student-reservists psychologically with:

  • Emotional support through the Beatrice Weston Unit for Student Advancement
  • Access to private sessions with Dalia Peled, the director of the Technion’s Student Counseling & Support Center
  • Access to an emergency hotline and crisis intervention treatment — individual treatment of 10 to 12 sessions with a clinical psychologist through the Phillip and Francis Fried Counseling Center

Academic Support

The Technion has supported its student-reservists academically with:

  • Individualised, customisedacademic workplans and mentors to help with missed coursework
  • Academic credit for reserve service, contributing to students’ elective degree requirements
  • The opportunity to repeat courses that did not go as planned without a penalty to students’ academic records
  • Tuition relief for summer courses or extra semesters beyond the typical time-to-degree
  • Special accommodations for completing exams, such as extra time for exams and rescheduling of exams that conflict with reserve service
  • Exclusive access to the Fischer Center for Reservists and Students with Learning Disabilities
  • A personal tutor, supplementing assistance provided by the Technion
  • Access to high-quality online course resources such as GOOL and Studies
  • Accelerated forms of instruction that allow students to complete a semester’s courseload at a faster pace

Thank You

Thanks to our generous donors, Technion students have continued to pursue their academic and personal goals in wartime despite substantial military service commitments and threats to campus security. The financial, psychological, and academic support the Technion has provided its student reservists has restored students’ well-being, enabling them to balance their military service with their studies. Additionally, critical measures to keep the Technion campus safe have enabled learning and discovery to continue despite security threats. We remain committed to ensuring that we achieve President Uri Sivan’s stated goals of leaving no student behind and continuing to operate as close to normal as possible. The Technion extends deep gratitude to our donors for enabling us to achieve these goals and to support all members of the Technion community, especially our student-reservists.
