SUMMARY:Melbourne - Quantum Computing - A laymen discussion with Prof. Moti Segev
DESCRIPTION:Quantum Computing: truth or hype? \n  \nOrdinary computers seem strong\, powerful\, but in fact that are very many problems that even combining all the computing power on Earth would not solve in a reasonable time (say\, 50 years). One such example is the “traveling salesman”: how to find the optimal route (the route that would take the shortest time) between 100 destinations. Another example is drug design: we know the equations governing the molecules\, but we can’t simulate their action because it is too complicated to compute with even the strongest computers. Yet another example is to break security codes within a reasonable time. But quantum computers in principle can do that. In the past decade\, we have witnessed worldwide attempts to build quantum computers. Companies do that because many of them need to optimize designs (Amazon\, IBM\, Google\, and many others). Governments do that because they want to break security codes. Pharmaceutical companies are interested because today drugs are designed through experimental “trial and error”. Is it therefore understandable why huge resources are being invested in constructing quantum computers\, and quite a few companies often hold press releases where they declare their quantum computer has demonstrated superiority to classical computers. Is all of that true or just a hype? What is the true status of quantum computing? Will we have a useful quantum computer within the next decade: a computer that can actually do something useful? Finally\, are there alternatives that can be used as interim solutions\, until one day a useful quantum computer becomes a reality? \n

SUMMARY:ASK THE EXPERT - COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Hear from infectious disease expert on Israel’s and Australia’s Covid-19 strategy and challenges.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nWith having reached over 1\,000 positive cases of COVID-19 a day\, many parts of Sydney and NSW have been in strict lockdown for over two months now. In the rest of Australia the figures are even lower\, yet most parts are also experiencing continued lockdown. On the flip side\, Israel which has a similar population count to NSW\, is enjoying much greater freedom despite reaching the highest peak during the entire pandemic of over 10\,000 positive cases of Covid-19 a day. \nHow can that be explained?

SUMMARY:The Sky is NOT the Limit
DESCRIPTION:The so called “space race” between the world’s most powerful economies (mostly the U.S.\, Russia and China) is no longer restricted to governments. \nRecently\, Billionaire Jeff Bezos spent 10 minutes in space in his ‘New Shepard’ spaceship\, a few days earlier Richard Branson was also “touring” space and it is all happening while Elon Musk is working on his “out of this world” project to inhabit Mars – Space X. \nAustralia and Israel are not staying behind. They are investing substantially to join the “race”. \nNext year\, Eytan Stibbe will become the second Israeli to enter space. Eytan will conduct several experiments that are expected to advance the study of science and medicine in Israel in various fields. Three of these experiments\, from the Technion will be launched to the International Space Station. \nFurthermore\, a group of three autonomous microsatellites developed by the Technion were launched into space. The trio – part of the Adelis-SAMSON project – will be able to calculate the location of radiating sources on Earth\, locating people\, airplanes\, and marine vessels\, thus enabling search-and-rescue missions around the world. \nMeanwhile\, the Australian Space Agency approves plan to launch test rockets from Whalers Way near Port Lincoln\, which follows the Australian Government’s recent announcement of helping local space manufacturers expand their supply chains globally through its AU$1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative. \nJoin global space experts as they share insight into the future of space\, how it affects everyday life and what role Australia and Israel play in this world.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Dark Web - Cybercrime and Cyber Security in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Technological breakthroughs have enabled humanity to advance in a pace and manner that only a few decades ago would not have been imagined. \nIronically this brings with it some of the greatest challenges we also face today. \nFrom countries\, states and large economies\, through to private or public companies\, not-for-profit organisations\, down to individuals like you\, are all exposed to an ever increasing technological threat – Cyber related threats. \nMost organisations\, irrespective of size gather an enormous amount of information and corporate intellectual property. Often the information they have is very sensitive making it a target for attacks which are generally aimed at gathering information\, harming information\, or disabling services. Such attacks can damage an organisation’s reputation\, endanger virtual and physical assets which result in significant financial costs. Cyber attacks on government and public bodies and infrastructure may disrupt the lives of an entire state and even compromise the wellbeing and security of its citizens. \nOur presenters are at the forefront of cyber security intelligence and the insights they share will enable attendees to underestand these problems and offer possible solutions. \nSpeakers: \nJasmina Zito \nJasmina is a security engineer who specialises in Cyber Threat Intelligence; as well as a freelance illustration artist. SUMMARY:Technology Empowering Disability
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Amit Goffer experienced a tragic accident that confined him to a wheelchair – as an accomplished inventor and entrepreneur\, he didn’t accept his fate to never stand up right again and immediately started to develop alternative modes of transport to the traditional wheelchair. \nIn 2001 he created the ReWalk system\, the first commercially available exoskeleton. Due to the severity of his injury\, Amit couldn’t use it himself\, but hundreds of thousands of people could benefit from it. (Amit is a quadriplegic – ReWalk is designed for paraplegics). \nMore recently\, he developed UPnRIDE to provide full mobility in a standing position in almost any urban environment. That is something that Amit\, as a quadriplegic\, has benefited from. \nTechnion Australia and the University of Melbourne are delighted to welcome Amit at our next webinar which will also include Jim Patrick AO\, VP and Chief Scientist Emeritus at Cochlear. Cochlear is among Australia’s most iconic brands and has given deaf people the gift of hearing for almost 40 years. Cochlear designs\, manufactures and distributes innovative hearing implants. \nJim has been involved in Cochlear implant research and commercial development since 1975\, when he joined Cochlear Founder\, Greame Clark’s research team. In 1981 he moved to Sydney as a member of the Cochlear “Tiger Team” inside the Nucleus group\, developing a ‘clinically applicable’ Cochlear implant. He has been a member of Cochlear’s leadership team having at different times responsibility for R&D\, Clinical Research and Manufacturing. Jim is considered a world authority on Cochlear implants. \nAmit and Jim will discuss the power that technology has to overcome disability\, the future of biomedical engineering and how to create an innovative culture.

SUMMARY:Impacting Science from a Small Country - Q&A w Nobel Prize laureate
DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades\, eight Israeli scientists have won the Nobel Prize\, an extraordinary achievement for a country of its size and population. \nWinning a Nobel prize is an honour that is reserved for a few extraordinary people. It is the highest recognition a scientist can achieve; it’s like winning the Oscar for best actor\, an Emmy for the best song\, or winning a Tennis grand slam. \nIn 2004\, Prof. Aaron Ciechanover and colleagues\, Prof. Avram Hershko and Prof. Irwin Rose received the prestigious Nobel prize in Chemistry for their discovery of the Ubiquitin protein. This discovery illuminates the process by which the cells of most living organisms remove unwanted proteins and it has completely transformed the way cancer and other degenerative diseases are treated. \nTechnion Australia and the Australian Academy of Science are honoured to welcome Prof. Ciechanover at our next webinar. \nIn conversation with Anna-Maria Arabia\, CEO of the Australian Academy of Science\, Ciechanover will discuss the future of medicine and cancer research\, talk about Israel’s unique entrepreneurial ecosystem and how it impacts global research\, and share from his journey to winning a Nobel prize.

SUMMARY:Nanomaterials for medical devices: size matters
DESCRIPTION:Technion Australia is delighted to invite you to a conversation with A/Prof. Olga Shimoni who will share how nanotechnology impacts our lives and healthcare in particular. \nNanotechnology has applications across chemistry\, biology\, physics\, materials science\, and engineering\, covering anything from wrinkle-resistant fabrics to better baseball bats and batteries with improved energy storage capacity. However\, it is in the healthcare field that nanotechnology promises to provide the most significant results. \nOne of the most promising potential contributions of nanotechnology is in the space of screening and diagnostic tools for early detection of diseases. Early and accurate detection of diseases exhibits several advantages\, such as disease at an early stage can be curable or efficiently treatable\, reduction of financial burden to individuals and the public health system as well as real-time health monitoring. \nBeginning her career and academic journey at the Technion’s school of material engineering\, Olga\, for the past 15 years has dedicated her life to understanding biology\, physics\, material and chemical sciences and how it impacts the world we live in. \nHer passion and specific area of expertise includes studying the implications nanotech has on medical devices and applications with particular emphasis on its capacity of identifying diseases at an early stage. \nPlease join us at what promises to be a fascinating presentation.

SUMMARY:The role of academia in Israel's defence
DESCRIPTION:BY INVITATION ONLY – \nProf. Golany\nOn behalf of Ruth and Bob Magid\, Technion Australia is delighted to invite you and your partner as our guests to a private reception with Prof. Boaz Golany\, Vice President at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology + special welcome by Israel’s Ambassador to Australia\, Mr. Mark Sofer. \nSince its establishment\, the State of Israel has faced ongoing security threats\, including those relating to its very existence. \nMaintaining a qualitative and technological advantage is key to its survival and prosperity\, coupled with the need to persuade its neighbours that the path of peace is always preferable to the way of war. \nThis advantage is largely reliant on human capital – and especially scientific capabilities. \nFor the past century the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology has continuously invested and nurtured Israel’s brightest by providing them with the necessary skill set to become leading engineers and scientists\, the defence sector is no exception. Many of Israel’s greatest breakthroughs in defence are credited to Technion’s researchers and alumni. This includes Iron Dome and Arrow 3 which were mostly developed by Technion graduates. \nA former tank commander\, Prof. Golany is regarded as a leading Israeli authority on security and counter-terrorism. Playing a key role in Israel’s top university gives him a unique perspective on how Israel prepares the next generation of engineers to meet current and future security threats. \nWe look forward to welcoming you on the day. \nDr. Ruth Ratner\, President and\nOri Danieli\, Executive Director\nTechnion Australia.
