Professor Dame Marie Bashir Scholarship Program announced

Technion Australia has established the Professor the Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO Scholarship Program to honour the awarding of a Doctor Honoris Causa to her by the Technion and her agreeing to become the NSW Patron of Technion Australia.

The Program provides scholarships to enable Australian students from high school to post graduate to attend the Technion.

“We wanted to do something that would reflect Professor Bashir’s lifelong commitment to adolescents and young adults as well as the disadvantaged and students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background, “ president, Dr Ruth Ratner said.

“The Program is open to all Australian students who wish to undertake an approved program or exchange course at the Technion and will give special emphasis to the disadvantaged and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background reflecting Professor Bashir’s interests and work,” she said.

The Program has been well received and there is widespread support resulting in Technion Australia opening it up for anyone to make a donation in honour of Professor Bashir.

“Just as Prof Bashir has always been a person of the people we are hoping that the people will support this initiative,” she said.

“Student exchanges are of immeasurable value. The programs enhance the student’s education and life experiences and often result in life long relationships. Additionally, in a world where Israel is often portrayed poorly they serve to breakdown stereotypes and misconceptions.”

Applicants must satisfy the guidelines of the Technion Australia Scholarship Fund.

Scholarships awarded under the Program will vary according to the course undertaken and circumstances of the applicant but typically will be between $3,000 and $10,000.

Donors will receive reports on the students and courses undertaken.
